Roger McNamee started playing music as a kid, but soon gave it up when he discovered that his piano teacher was... well, that's another story. As a teenager, Roger was entranced by the guitar playing of Jorma Kaukonen, Eric Clapton, and Jerry Garcia. He bought himself a Harmony acoustic - which promptly got stolen - and then a cherry red Gibson SG, which he still has. Roger's first band, Guff, experienced a modicum of success in and around New Haven, CT. His second, a happy hour duo with brother Giles called the Other Bros., lasted for more than a decade... ultimately leading to the formation of the FOBs.
When Roger met Jerry Garcia in 1975, the conversation was brief. "Hi!" was what Roger said. Jerry replied, "Hi!" Roger finally met Jorma in New York in 1997, and started taking lessons from him three years later. Roger still can't fingerpick worth a damn, but he'd like to think that one day he might be able to play Hesitation Blues in the style of the master...
